“In the last days, God says ‘I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh and your sons and daughters will prophesy'.” - Acts 2:17
While I believe in prophets and honor the office of the Prophet, we must recognize that God did not give the Church the gift of the prophet in order for us to be merely impressed with their revelation.
God gave the five-fold gifts in order to equip, mature, and train the body of Christ. He gave these gifts to help the rest of the body access what has already been made available through the Cross.
“My sheep know my voice.” - John 10:27
Even after the fall of man, God still spoke and people could still hear His voice. How much more can we hear His voice now in this new, better covenant?
Many of us aspire to speak for God in a public setting, but our greatest need is to hear the Spirit’s voice privately for ourselves. You can’t prophesy if you don’t hear His voice. I have heard anointed men of God — men I greatly respect — say “If you merely think God might have spoken to you, then He hasn’t. If He spoke to you, then you know it.”
That sounds good, in theory, but I can’t agree. Why? Because the problem is never on God’s end of speaking, it’s on our end of hearing. Perhaps a better way to say this is that God is continually communicating rather than speaking.
“For God speaks in one way, and in two, though man does not perceive it.” - Job 33:14
If you have a spouse then you know that communication is much more than just verbal. Many spouses can tell what their spouse is communicating just by a glance. Often children know if their behavior or attitudes are pleasing to their parents simply by their parents “look.” It’s the same when we steward our intimacy with Father God.
Ask Holy Spirit today: What is the Father thinking about me today? What is one important thing He wants me to know today?
As you await a response, dwell on the fact that you were created by Him and for Him. Rest in the knowledge that as a child of God, you have the ability to hear His voice.
In fact, you were made for it.
